Problem – in order to be back in Israel Friday afternoon, you have to leave the West Coast on Wednesday, effectively giving you a 3 day work week. Here are the general options for travel from the West Coast Wednesday evening back to Israel on Friday (before sundown).
OPTION 1 – Travel through Europe – leave SFO around 7p (BA, UA) or as late as 930p (LH). Arrives in Europe Thursday afternoon. Continue (from LHR, FRA, MUC) to Israel (LY, BA, LU). Arrives in Israel around midnight. Thursday is shot, but Friday can be a normal day.
OPTION 2 – Redeye and full day in New York – leaves SFO around 10p (DL, AA, UA, CO) arrives NY around 630a (showers at Newark CO Presidents club in C3 concourse). Get a full workday in NY and then head to Israel at 8pm on LY 002 (or on DL at 9p). Back in Ranana/Modiin/Jerusalem by 3pm (430p for Delta) Friday. Shower again and off to the synagogue to conduct contemplate more business.
OPTION 3 – Redeye and half day in New York – Get a half workday in NY and then head to Israel at 230pm on LY 028 (or on CO at 4p). Back in Ranana/Modiin/Jerusalem Friday morning.
OPTION 4 – Go Via LAX – You have until 145p (or really ~noon) to get to LAX on Thursday and make it back to Israel Friday afternoon. This even gives you time for an early breakfast meeting in the Bay area (as long as you can get to SFO/SJC for a 10a flight). Good luck with this one!
OPTION 99 – Redeye through New York and next flight out to Israel - leaves SFO around 10p (DL, AA, UA, CO) arrives NY around 630a. First nonstop out of NY is on LY at noon. Gets to Israel 5a. With 2 nights in a row on the plane and 6 dead hours in NY – this is not really a popular option.
Variations:
LAX - nonstop all the way to TLV Thur 145p – arrives TLV 210p Friday! A very long flight – better upgrade to business or bring lots of sleeping pills.
Other options – nonstops to LHR, CDG, ZRH for option 1. Lots of Redeye options for options 2 and 3.
SEA - for our friends at Microsoft (or those who want to be acquired by Microsoft) – nonstops to LHR for option 1. For options 2 and 3 – there are no redeye flights from SEA. Only option is to add yet another flight and pickup a redeye from PDX, SFO or LAS.
And for the record, my favorite – a full week on the West Coast. R&R in San Francisco on Friday/Saturday and head back Saturday night fully rested after a successful trip.
Disclaimers:
1. Budget was not part of the considerations. Neither were frequent flyer programs.
2. I did not take into account travel Friday evening or Saturday day. Consult your local Rabbi for that.
